Generally it seems that the masses associate comics with superheroes. So it's those books/movies that stray from that that seem to surprise people.

I often use Road to Perdition and History of Violence as examples to people that comics can be much more than capes.

we got cautious pessimism vs cautious optimism here. i like it when they swing for the fences. and who really knows what will happen.
I remember getting all worked up when PLOP! started running ads in 1974 after being ad free. the book got canceled when everyone piled on. not sure if this is a valid comment, but I still have PLOP! guilt.

Rob Liefeld art shakes me up in all the wrong ways ;)

seeing as how Northlanders is being cancelled by Vertigo due to poor sales of the trades, it does appear that DC is hoping for digital & trade sales to mitigate poor single-issue numbers of a lesser-known writer & eventually convince people to switch to the monthly book. That may allow some of the smaller titles to continue on for awhile. At the same time, when you launch 52 new titles after only carrying ~30 for many years, there's likely an expectation that more than a few will end up cancelled in the next year or two.

A digital-only project is an interesting idea but I wonder if DC has the balls to try that (and promote it correctly). For all the hype surrounding same-day digital sales, it's not exactly a revolutionary idea.

yea i get that...i might be projecting more pessimism on you guys. it's just a reaction to all the rock throwing I've been seeing on this. art is supposed to shake you up once in a while. on the plus side I was thinking maybe good stories (say a Jeff Lemire pet project) could see the light of day digitally (w/ a cheaper investment by the comic companies) then wind up in a trade when people are turned on to it on-line first. could be wild.

"cautious pessismism" is what I said in the podcast & I stand by that. I actually won't be reading a lot of these titles because the creative teams are lackluster and the reboot is just a silly gimmick for their longstanding titles. It bugs me that some comics that appeared to be doing fairly well & were very well-written, Zatanna as one example, are getting axed prematurely to fit the narrative. It bugs me that the costume changes are cosmetic in some cases, ridiculous in others, and actively make no sense to cover in a publisher-wide edict when they're blatantly ignored for specific characters.

Yes, we read comics, but I'm not going to pick up titles just because one of the publishers has decided to shake things up for the sake of marketing & better sales. Give me good stories & good art first. That will make me pay attention, and I'll be more inclined to open my wallet.

You guys hit on many of my concerns with the creators that they chose--a lot of headscratchers in there. JT Krul and Tony Daniels? Why? And Francis Manapul? Love his art...he's a writer now?

You guys are incredible; I miss the video podcast though mostly for this reason- it feels like I'm sitting in on the conversation with video; contrarily, with audio only, I feel like I'm driving, while listening to the radio....mehhh. Keep up being the best comic podcast EVER....I like you better than the Comic Book Club guys.....
